Jasmin Paris is a name that has become synonymous with endurance, resilience, and groundbreaking achievements in the world of ultra-running. Known for her remarkable feats in some of the world’s toughest races, Paris has not only shattered course records but also redefined what is possible for women in endurance sports. Her story is one of determination, strength, and balancing the demands of elite competition with everyday life.

Early Life and Introduction to Running

Jasmin Paris was born in 1983 and raised in the rugged landscapes of the Peak District in England, where she developed a deep connection with nature. Her early exposure to the outdoors, including hiking and exploring the hills with her family, laid the foundation for her love of endurance challenges.

However, Paris didn’t start running competitively until later in life. She initially focused on academics, pursuing a career in veterinary science and later earning a PhD in animal physiology. It wasn’t until her university years that she began running regularly, quickly discovering her talent for navigating tough terrain and covering long distances.

Rise in the Fell and Ultra-Running Scene

Paris first gained recognition in the world of fell running, a form of mountain running over steep, rough terrain in the UK. She quickly established herself as a dominant force in the sport, winning numerous races and earning respect for her fearless and aggressive racing style.

In 2016, she won the prestigious British Fell Running Championships, solidifying her place among the top runners in the UK. That same year, she claimed victory in the grueling Skyrunning World Series, showcasing her ability to compete on both national and international stages.

The Record-Breaking Spine Race (2019)

Jasmin Paris’s most iconic achievement came in January 2019 when she won the Montane Spine Race, one of the most brutal ultra-distance events in the world. The race spans 268 miles (431 km) along the Pennine Way in the UK, through rugged mountains, freezing temperatures, and relentless terrain.

Paris not only won the race outright—beating all male and female competitors—but also shattered the existing course record by 12 hours, finishing in 83 hours, 12 minutes, and 23 seconds.

What made her performance even more extraordinary was that she was breastfeeding her infant daughter at the time. Paris paused at checkpoints to pump breast milk, balancing the physical demands of the race with the responsibilities of being a mother. Her accomplishment made global headlines and inspired countless athletes by demonstrating that elite athletic performance and motherhood are not mutually exclusive.

Other Notable Achievements

  • Bob Graham Round: Paris has conquered the legendary Bob Graham Round, a 66-mile fell running challenge in England’s Lake District involving 42 peaks, 27,000 feet of ascent, and a strict 24-hour time limit.

  • Ramsay Round: In 2016, she set a record for the Ramsay Round in Scotland, a brutal 56-mile mountain challenge with 24 summits, which she completed in an incredible 16 hours and 13 minutes.

  • International Success: Paris has also competed in demanding international races, including the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB) and Skyrunning events across Europe, consistently finishing among the top athletes.

Balancing Elite Running with Career and Family

Beyond her athletic achievements, Jasmin Paris is also a dedicated veterinary researcher and a mother. She has managed to balance elite-level competition with a demanding academic career and family life.

Her ability to juggle multiple roles—researcher, runner, and mother—has made her an inspiring figure for athletes striving to balance personal goals with family and professional commitments. Paris has often spoken about the importance of running for mental clarity and how it integrates into her daily life.

Breaking Barriers for Women in Ultra-Running

Jasmin Paris’s success has played a pivotal role in challenging gender norms in ultra-endurance sports. Her outright victory in the Spine Race showcased that women can not only compete but also excel and dominate in the most grueling endurance events.

Her story has helped to elevate conversations around gender equality in sports, parenthood, and the need for better support systems for women athletes balancing family and competition.

The Barkley Marathons: Paris Takes on the Ultimate Challenge

In 2023, Paris became the first woman in a decade to complete the "Fun Run" (three loops) at the notoriously brutal Barkley Marathons in Tennessee—an event considered one of the toughest ultra-endurance races in the world. Known for its near-impossible navigation, harsh conditions, and 60-hour time limit, the Barkley Marathons has seen only a handful of finishers in its history.

Paris’s performance at Barkley once again demonstrated her mental and physical resilience, pushing the boundaries of human endurance in one of the sport's most extreme environments.

Legacy and Impact on the Sport

Jasmin Paris has left an indelible mark on the world of ultra-running. Her groundbreaking achievements have:

  • Redefined what women can achieve in endurance sports.

  • Inspired thousands of runners—especially women and mothers—to pursue ambitious goals.

  • Raised awareness about the balance between family life, career, and athletic excellence.

Her humility, grit, and determination continue to motivate athletes of all levels.
