The 2025 Tokyo Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, March 2, is poised to be a landmark event in the world of distance running. As the inaugural race of the newly expanded Abbott World Marathon Majors series, which now includes seven events with the addition of Sydney, Tokyo sets the stage for an exhilarating marathon season. The flat and fast course, commencing at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and concluding at Tokyo Station, is expected to witness remarkable performances from an elite field of athletes.

Men's Elite Field: A Clash of Titans

Leading the men's division is Kenya's Benson Kipruto, the defending champion who set a Japanese all-comers' record of 2:02:16 in last year's event. Kipruto's impressive performance has established him as a formidable contender, and all eyes will be on him to see if he can replicate his record-breaking feat.

Joining Kipruto is Uganda's Joshua Cheptegei, the world record holder in the 5000m and 10,000m events. Cheptegei is making his second marathon appearance after debuting with a 2:08:59 finish in Valencia in 2023. Known for his exceptional track speed, his transition to the marathon distance is highly anticipated.

The competition intensifies with six athletes in the lineup who have clocked sub-2:04 marathon times. Notable among them is Ethiopia's Deresa Geleta, the Olympic fifth-place finisher and Valencia Marathon runner-up, boasting a personal best of 2:02:38. Two-time Tokyo Marathon winner Birhanu Legese also returns, aiming to reclaim his title. Other prominent contenders include Tadese Takele and Kenya's Vincent Kipkemoi Ngetich, who secured third place in Tokyo last year.

Japanese athletes are poised to make a significant impact as well. Akira Akasaki, who finished sixth in the Paris 2024 Olympics, and Yohei Ikeda, who recorded the second-best time ever for a Japanese runner with a 2:05:12 at the 2024 Berlin Marathon, are among the top domestic contenders. Veteran runner Suguru Osako, a two-time Olympian, adds depth to the home country's lineup. The presence of debutant Aoi Ota, known for his stellar performance at the Hakone Ekiden, adds an element of excitement to the Japanese contingent. citeturn0search0

Women's Elite Field: A Battle of Champions

The women's division promises an equally thrilling contest, featuring a lineup of world-class athletes. Defending champion Sutume Asefa Kebede of Ethiopia returns after setting a Japanese all-comers' record of 2:15:55 in the 2024 Tokyo Marathon. Kebede's remarkable performance last year has solidified her status as a leading contender in women's marathon running.

Challenging Kebede is Kenya's Brigid Kosgei, the 2022 Tokyo Marathon winner and former world record holder, with a personal best of 2:14:04. Kosgei's experience and record-breaking history make her a formidable opponent. Another strong contender is Rosemary Wanjiru, also from Kenya, who claimed victory in the 2023 Tokyo Marathon with a personal best of 2:16:14. Wanjiru's consistent performances in Tokyo highlight her affinity for the course and her competitive spirit.

Ethiopia's Tigist Ketema, who won the 2024 Dubai Marathon with a time of 2:16:07, adds depth to the elite field. Her recent victory in Dubai showcases her capability to perform exceptionally in high-stakes races. Additionally, Frankfurt Marathon winner Hawi Feysa, with a personal best of 2:17:25, is set to make her Tokyo Marathon debut, bringing fresh competition to the race.

The field also includes other notable athletes such as Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, with a marathon best of 2:17:56, and Degitu Azimeraw, also from Ethiopia, who has a personal best of 2:17:58. These athletes' impressive track records contribute to the anticipation surrounding the women's race.

From the host nation, Japan's Ai Hosoda stands out with a personal best of 2:20:31, achieved at the 2024 Berlin Marathon. Hosoda's performance has positioned her as a leading Japanese contender, aiming to break the sub-2:20 barrier on home soil. Yuka Ando, another prominent Japanese runner, with a personal best of 2:21:18, adds to the domestic hopes for a strong finish.

The women's race is expected to be highly competitive, with multiple athletes capable of challenging the course record. The strategic dynamics and individual performances will be closely watched by fans and analysts alike.
